Premier League Darts: Whitlock can beat Wade and Thornton to play-offs

| 09.05.2013

Night 14 of the Premier League is upon us and with James Wade’s fourth and final play-off spot under threat from Robert Thornton and Simon Whitlock there is still much to play for at Newcastle’s Metro Arena. Whitlock may have the fewest points on the but he has the easiest run of fixtures and can be backed to record a 5/1 win double that can see him through to the play-offs at the expense of the aforementioned rivals.

Robert Thornton started the campaign like a man destined for the top four, with just one loss in his first six outings but “The Thorn” has now won just one of his last outings in the competition. With a game in hand over James Wade Thornton will ensure himself a play-off place if he wins both his fiendishly tough final fixtures tonight.

The first sees him take on Raymond van Barneveld, a darter who he has yet to best in five oche encounters. The only darters to defeat “Barney” so far have been the pair that sit above him in the table and the Dutchman can place the qualification onus back on Wade by beating Thorton – Coral go 5/6 about the Van Barneveld win.

Given four of the the pair’s five clashes have been decide by two legs or less over 11.5 legs in the match can be backed at 5/6.

A Wade win is hardly a foregone conclusion as he takes on Phil Taylor, who has four wins and a draw in his last five starts, especially as “The Machine” who has lost four of his last five Premier League games. It’s been 14 matches since Wade beat Taylor and “The Power” is 8/15 to make it

Robert Thornton’s final opponent is table-topping Michael van Gerwen and with “Mighty Mike” keen to end the regular season in top-sport there will be no let up against the play-off chasing Scot. Van Gerwen – whose unparalleled scoring means he’s hit some 39 more 140+ scores than Thornton this term – is 4/9 to win with Coral.

Coral offer an enhanced “Big Two” double on wins for Taylor and Van Gerwen at a juicy 13/10.

With both his rivals dealt fixtures that they may struggle to glean victory from, Simon Whitlock can sneak past Thornton and Wade with a brace of wins.

First up is Adrian Lewis, who steps up on six game losing streak having lost six of his last seven meeting with the Australian who is 10/11 to claim his fifth win in six Premier League games.

Should he do so he’ll need to return to the oche and beat Raymond van Barneveld. “The Wizzard” is ahead in the pair’s career head to head and he can be backed to avenge a 7-3 defeat earlier in this year’s competition at 21/10, with his opponent already assured of a play-off berth.
