Premier League new boys Boro bag Fischer

Promoted Premier League club Middlesbrough have completed the sensational signing of Ajax and Denmark attacker Viktor Fischer for €5m, tying the forward to an four-year deal, in a coup seen as a huge statement of survival intent.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka has managed to catch Fischer from the Dutch giants for a fee of £Xm, as the 21-year-old moves on from the Eredivisie after four seasons and 79 appearances.

Somewhat of a shock signing for the recent Championship runners-up, Fischer was once courted by giants around Europe after his impressive performances on the wing, which yielded 24 league goals for Ajax.

Though, the adaptable wingman suffered an injury setback which saw him sidelined for 14 months and make just four outings last campaign, but he still notched three goals in those limited appearances.

The eight-capped Denmark attacker, crowned 2013 Ajax Talent of the Year, is an exciting addition to forward-thinking coach Karanka’s ranks, having already lifted two Eredivisie titles at such a young age.

Though a left winger by trade, flexible Fischer can also operate on the right flank or up top, so would be a perfect addition for a fluid system at the Riverside.

A goal threat with bundles of pace and great technique, Fischer should fit the Premier League like a glove. The Aarhus-born attacker is still highly-rated but has been hooked on Middlesbrough’s line for such a low fee with his contract due to expire next summer.

Boro (5/4 shouts with Coral to be relegated) certainly look to be building a squad with flair and appetite and, in a similar vein to Watford last season, seem intent on not just survival but making a real crack at life in the Premier League with some significant investment.

Midfielder Gaston Ramirez, recently re-called to the Uruguay Copa America squad, is another potential signing, after the 25-year-old was released by Southampton after spending a successful 17 games on loan at the Riverside last season, with Boro now reportedly set to snap the former Bologna man up permanently on a free transfer.

Already in attack the Teesside team boast prolific Scotland international Jordan Rhodes, who must be itching for the chance to prove himself in England’s top-tier, with Uruguay international Cristhian Stuani linking play behind alongside London-born Ghana international Albert Adomah.

While Karanka can also count on homegrown talents such as experienced skipper Grant Leadbitter, Stewart Downing of former Liverpool and West Ham United fame and academy-reared young defender Ben Gibson to provide a strong core of talent to boost their hopes of remaining in the top flight after a seven-year absence.

Will Fischer, and more exciting signings in the same vein, ensure they stay put? An expectant Riverside will certainly hope so.
