IPL Trader’s Tips: Buttler to bounce back with a star display?

| 29.03.2019

Our cricket expert gives us the lowdown on Friday’s big game

The Indian Premier League action continues this afternoon, with Sunrisers Hyderabad in action against Rajasthan Royals.

After losing their opening match of the new season, both sides will be out to get a first win on the board at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Our cricket trader Andrew Harriott has had his say on the action, and told us what to look out for in the season ahead…

Coral News: Both of these sides lost in their opening fixtures, how are they looking ahead of this one?

Andrew Harriott: Although both teams lost, they played ok, and were both heavy favourites in running. Hyderabad ran into a Andre Russell special and Rajasthan got Mankadded!

Hyderabad have the strongest bowling attack in the tournament and are worthy 4/6 favourites for their first home game.

CN: There’s been a lot of talk about Jos Buttler’s ‘Mankad’ dismissal this week. Are you expecting a big batting display from the England star here?

AH: The Mankad incident with Ashwin and Butler has been a hugely controversial one. Personally I felt the umpire was weak and should have given it not out.

Buttler’s form in his last several IPL innings is incredible. He’s 2/1 to be Rajasthan Top Runscorer and 6/1 to be Man of the Match. I expect his great form to continue. It’ll be interesting to see if Hyderabad bring Rashid Khan on early to get him out before he gets set.

CN: There’s plenty of English interest in the Royals, with Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes also among their ranks. How important could they be this season?

AH: Rajasthan will be strong for their first 10 games with their full strength side. I’m not sure how they shape up once the English players leave for the start of a huge English summer.

Archer looked to be firing on all cylinders in game one. Stokes could do with some runs. He’s 7/1 to be Top Runscorer.

CN: David Warner is back for the Sunrisers this year, how big a difference can he make?

AH: Warner’s IPL record is second to none. His excellent 85 in game one answered all questions over whether he would be ring rusty after his ban for ball tampering. They have as good a chance as any team to win the whole thing with Warner and Rashid Khan.

David Warner in action for the Sunrisers

CN: After being blown away by Andre Russell last week, will we see an improved performance from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and the rest of the Sunrisers’ bowling unit?

AH: I think Hyderabad ran into Andre Russell in full beast mode. He did it again in game two. I’d back Hyderabad to bounce back at home.

CN: Any particular markets you like the look of for this match?

AH: I couldn’t put you off Buttler and Warner for Top Runscorer.  They are short prices but they both tend to back up good performances.

CN: Looking further ahead, who do you expect to be the major challengers for the title this year?

AH: I like Delhi, but they were schooled by MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings earlier in the week. Right now last year’s finalists Hyderabad and Chennai look strongest. It’s still very early days though.

I don’t think Rajasthan can win as they lose so many good players to international duty later on.

CN: And what players are you looking forward to watching?

AH: I’ll be keeping a close eye on Steve Smith. His partner in crime Warner has looked fine on comeback, but it will be interesting to see how Smith performs with not much time until the World Cup and Ashes.

If he looks as good as ever, Australia will start to look like real contenders for the World Cup on back of wins in India and Pakistan.
