Can Jose Mourinho mastermind a Tottenham miracle at RB Leipzig?

| 10.03.2020

Odds, preview and betting tips for this evening’s Champions League clash

Tottenham fans could be forgiven for wondering how their season may have panned out had they not been so hasty in sacking Mauricio Pochettino.

His replacement Jose Mourinho made a bright start to life at Spurs but a dismal few weeks and a squad decimated by injuries leaves them in danger of missing out on the top four.

And after crashing out of the FA Cup at the hands of Norwich, they now need to overturn a one-goal deficit away at RB Leipzig without their key attacking threats in order to save their season.

In years gone by, Mourinho would have been the ideal manager to mastermind a Champions League miracle. But has he still got his European spark?

RB Leipzig v Tottenham Hotspur Match Odds

After a 1-0 home defeat in the first leg, Spurs face an uphill battle to reach the quarter-finals. Last season’s runners-up are priced at 9/2 to win at Leipzig, and our traders have the same price for them to qualify.

Leipzig are the clear favourites at 4/7 to win this evening and 1/8 to progress.

Mourinho’s men have struggled defensively of late but they need to score thanks to Leipzig’s away goal and Spurs to win and both teams to score is going at 15/2.

Tottenham need somebody to step up in Harry Kane and Son Heung-min’s absence. Dele Alli has history of performing in crucial games and the England international is 3/1 to bag anytime or 28/1 to score two or more.

In normal circumstances, Spurs would fancy their chances of getting the job done. But with Kane and Son ruled out with injury, they could lack the firepower to hurt Leipzig.

January signing Steven Bergwijn is also expected to miss the rest of the campaign, leaving the burden up top on Alli and Lucas Moura.

Spurs are without a win in five games in all competitions and with an in-form Manchester United visiting north London this weekend, a Champions League comeback tonight would go a long way to relieving any underlying pressure on Mourinho.

But based on the first leg, it’s likely to be a frustrating evening for Tottenham, with Leipzig unfortunate not to come away with a heavier cushion.

Leipzig themselves have stalled in recent weeks with consecutive draws in the Bundesliga, although key man Timo Werner was benched for Saturday’s clash at Wolfsburg.

The German striker has scored an incredible 27 goals in all competitions so far this season and he’ll be licking his lips about facing a Tottenham defence without a clean sheet in its last seven outings.

Leipzig find themselves five points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race and while the double may realistically be out of reach, their strong season will only boost the credentials of Julian Nagelsmann.

The 32-year-old’s name was whispered when Spurs were eyeing up a replacement for Pochettino and despite his exciting young project at Leipzig, it’s inevitable that a bigger club will eventually tempt him away.
