League Cup betting tips: Spurs bid to down Clarets

| 27.10.2021

Preview and odds for Wednesday’s games

There are five last-16 games taking place on Wednesday and we look at a selection of those in our League Cup betting tips.

You can also read an in-depth preview for the games between West Ham v Man City and Preston v Liverpool but here we concentrate on the other trio of games.

Burnley v Tottenham

Burnley seek to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2008-09.

After a sticky start to their campaign, the Clarets have picked up points in three of their last four outings and drew 2-2 at Southampton on Saturday. They are 9/5 to beat Spurs.

It won’t be easy as historically they have struggled against the north London outfit, winning just one of their last 14 meetings in all competitions (D4 L9) – a 2-1 home league game in February 2019.

Tottenham have eliminated Burnley the last two times they’ve faced them in the League Cup, doing so in the 2008-09 semi-final and in round four in 2004-05. They are 6/4 to win in 90 minutes.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will hope to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat at West Ham on Sunday, their fourth Premier League loss of the season.

It was also their fourth defeat in a London derby this season, having previously been beaten by Crystal Palace (3-0), Chelsea (3-0) and Arsenal (3-1).

Tottenham haven’t won any of their last four League Cup games against fellow Premier League sides (D2 L2), though they did progress on penalties following the two draws in this run. The draw is on offer at odds of 23/10.

Leicester v Brighton

Leicester have reached the quarter-final in three of the last four seasons, only failing to do so in 2020-21, and they face a team who have rarely caused them problems in recent history.

The Foxes, who are evens to win, have lost just one of their last 10 home games against Brighton in all competitions (W6 D3), going down 4-1 in a Championship match in April 2014.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 of their last 12 games in all competitions.

The only time they have held an opponent scoreless in that run was when downing Millwall 2-0 at The Den in the third round of this competition.

Brighton, beaten 4-1 at home by Manchester City on Saturday, have failed to win any of their four subsequent games following their 2-0 defeat of Swansea in the third round.

However, Graham Potter’s side have won both of their previous League Cup games against Leicester, prevailing in each leg in the second round in 1994-95, and are 27/10 to win in 90 minutes.

There have been four draws in the last 19 meetings between the sides and it is 5/2 a stalemate will be the outcome this time.

Stoke v Brentford

Championship side Stoke have never lost at home to Premier League side Brentford in 14 previous meetings (W10 D4) and are 2/1 to win this time. It is 4/7 they avoid defeat in the Double Chance market.

Stoke started their Championship campaign brightly but after defeating West Brom, they have lost their last three games – including Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Millwall – and sit ninth in the table, 13 points adrift of leaders Bournemouth.

Brentford, who lost 2-1 at home to Leicester on Sunday, won their only previous domestic cup meeting with Stoke, recording a 1-0 success at home in the 2019-20 FA Cup.

They are 27/20 to win while the draw, which has occurred in three of the last 17 meetings, is on offer at odds of 23/10.
