League One betting tips: Charlton start life after Adkins

| 21.10.2021

Preview and odds for Saturday’s games

There is a full programme of 12 games being played in League One on Saturday and we look at three of them in our League One betting tips.

It is another busy weekend in the EFL and we also have previews of the Championship and League Two but here we focus on the third tier.

Sunderland v Charlton

Charlton have been a bit of a thorn in Sunderland’s paw in recent times, although these sides are heading in different directions at present.

Sunderland are in the automatic promotions spots, sitting a point behind leaders Plymouth with two games in hand on the south-coast club.

The Black Cats have won nine and lost one of their 12 games and enter this clash on the back of successive away victories at Gillingham (2-1) and Crewe (4-0). They are 4/6 to beat Charlton.

The Addicks have struggled this term and are currently in the bottom four, having managed just two wins from their 13 outings.

They have lost three of their last four, the latest at the hands of Accrington who gained a 3-2 win at The Valley on Tuesday – a result which cost boss Nigel Adkins his job.

Johnnie Jackson will take the role of caretaker manager against Sunderland and will be assisted by Jason Euell.

Charlton’s sole win on the road came at fellow strugglers Fleetwood and they are 21/5 to win at the Stadium of Light.

Yet the fact remains the Addicks have a good record against Sunderland and won 2-1 in this fixture last season.

Charlton have lost just three of the last 21 meetings with them (W7), although 11 of those clashes ended in stalemate.

The draw is on offer at odds of 14/5 while Charlton are 6/5 to either win or draw in the Double Chance market in the League One betting tips.

Both sides have scored in the last eight clashes at the Stadium of Light and it is 3/4 this will be the case again.

Accrington v Portsmouth

One of the surprise results in midweek was Ipswich’s 4-0 win at Fratton Park, where Pompey are usually hard to beat.

Yet while many fancied Portsmouth for promotion, their season has yet to really ignite.

They sit in a lowly 17th place in League One, having won four and drawn three of their 13 games.

Pompey have conceded four goals in each of their last two games – at Rotherham and at home to Ipswich – despite having put four past Sunderland without reply three weeks ago.

Danny Cowley’s side are 31/20 to win at the Crown Ground but they have not enjoyed life against Accrington in recent times, winning just one of their last seven meetings (D3 L3).

The sides have shared the spoils in six of their previous 14 encounters and the draw odds in the League Two betting tips are 11/5.

Accrington, who have only suffered one loss at home to Portsmouth in seven meetings, are 9/5 to win following their triumph at Charlton – their sixth victory of the season which leaves them in 10th spot, 10 points behind leaders Plymouth.

Both sides have found the net in six of the last seven meetings at Accrington and it is 3/4 for that to happen once more.

MK Dons v Rotherham

Sixth-placed MK Dons take on fifth-placed Rotherham as 15/8 underdogs despite winning 1-0 at Wigan on Tuesday, which halted a run of three without a victory (D1 L2).

Having won their previous three, Rotherham were held to a goalless draw at home by Wycombe on Tuesday but are 6/4 favourites to win.

Rotherham have won three of the last five meetings (D1 L1), including a 3-2 win in this fixture in November 2019, their last trip to Stadium MK.

There have been 12 meetings in total and five had ended in a draw – only one of them goalless. The draw is on offer at odds of 11/5 and a score draw is 16/5.
