Liverpool v Southampton betting tips: Reds refreshed for Saints clash

Preview and odds for Saturday’s Premier League clash

The unexpected postponement of Liverpool’s meeting with Manchester United means they will be well rested ahead of the visit of Southampton.

The Reds had the weekend off after protests at Old Trafford forced Sunday’s game to be called off and now have a game in hand on most of their rivals as they chase a European place.

In contrast, Southampton played Leicester with only 10 men for most of the match but will have been encouraged by a 1-1 draw which edged them closer to securing their Premier League status.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 8.15pm and is live on Sky Sports. Here we analyse the form of both teams to help find the best Liverpool v Southampton betting tips.

Liverpool v Southampton match odds

Liverpool have dropped points in each of their last two matches and surely cannot afford any more slip-ups if they are to squeeze into the Champions League places.

Back-to-back 1-1 draws against Leeds and Newcastle could prove costly but they are clear favourites at 2/7 to return to winning ways this weekend or 5/2 to drop points again.

A third successive draw for the Reds is 9/2 while Southampton are 9/1 for victory at Anfield, where the likes of Brighton, Burnley and Fulham have all enjoyed shock wins this season.

Those three victories were all 1-0 and another 1-0 away win is available at 28/1.

Liverpool have only scored more than one goal in one of their last 10 home Premier League games yet under 1.5 home goals can be backed at 11/5.

Liverpool v Southampton head-to-head

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Southampton

Saints may be massive underdogs to leave Merseyside with all three points but they were 1-0 winners when the teams met at St Mary’s in January.

There were less than two minutes on the clock when former Reds striker Danny Ings lobbed goalkeeper Alisson for what proved to be the only goal, and Southampton are 3/1 to score the first goal this weekend.

They have a poor recent record at Anfield though, losing their last three visits by an aggregate score of 10-0 including a 4-0 hammering last season when Mohamed Salah bagged a second-half brace.

Liverpool are 2/1 to win by three goals or more and Salah is 10/3 to score at least twice.

Previous XI

Liverpool vs Southampton - Football tactics and formations

Liverpool: Alisson, Kabak, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Thiago, Jota, Firmino, Mane, Salah.

Southampton: McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Vestergaard, Stephens, Bednarek, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Armstrong, Minamino, Adams, Tella.

Team news

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has to make late decisions on a few “bumps and bruises”. Nat Phillips will start at centre-back after missing two matches with a hamstring problem but midfielder Jordan Henderson has yet to rejoin team training.

Saints defender Jannik Vestergaard is available after the club were successful in an appeal against the red card he received against Leicester. Ings misses out against his former club because of a hamstring problem, while on-loan Takumi Minamino is not eligible.

Key battles

Liverpool have not been at their fluent best this season but Southampton are still likely to need the same defensive resilience which they showed against Leicester after the 10th-minute dismissal of Vestergaard.

Mohammed Salisu was brought on as a replacement as part of a defensive reshuffle and was described as “a warrior in defending” by boss Ralph Hasenhuttl as he also overcame the restrictions of Ramadan.

If called upon again he will face another tough test against Liverpool’s front three of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Saints look short of firepower without Ings but Liverpool’s defence will be wary of giving too many set-piece opportunities to James Ward-Prowse, who is 7/2 to add to the eight goals he has scored this season following his penalty against Leicester.
