Newcastle v Southampton betting tips: Saints bid to end jinx
Preview and odds for Saturday’s Premier League clash
The Magpies have lost both Premier League games thus far and hope to right the ship against the Saints on Saturday, so we look at some Newcastle v Southampton betting tips.
Newcastle lost 4-2 at home to West Ham and followed up with a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, while Southampton picked up a point in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United after losing 3-1 at Everton.
Saturday’s match, which takes place at St James’ Park, kicks off at 3pm.
Newcastle v Southampton match odds
Newcastle are still searching for their first points of the season after two successive defeats and are 31/20 to beat Southampton.
It is the fourth time in six seasons that they have lost their opening two league games, but they have not lost their first three since 1999/2000.
Keeping clean sheets at home has been an issue for Steve Bruce’s side. The Magpies have kept just two in their last 24 home league games and they are 13/5 to keep Saints scoreless this week.
Southampton have lost 11 of their last 12 Premier League away games, including the last six in a row. The last time they lost seven consecutive away games was in 2005, when they were relegated. Saints are 10/3 to be relegated this season.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side created several good opportunities against Manchester United at St Mary’s last Sunday, but only had an own goal from Fred to show for their efforts.

Newcastle v Southampton head-to-head
No less than 11 of the last 15 meetings have seen three or more goals scored in total and it is 4/5 that this is the case again.
In the last 18 meetings, the home side has lost just twice. For a bigger price in Newcastle v Southampton betting tips, it is 3/1 for the game to end in a score draw, which has been the case in nine of the last 10 stalemates between the two sides since 1973.
Newcastle v Southampton key battles
Southampton need to do a better job of securing what they have. Since Hasenhuttl took charge in December 2018, Saints have dropped 62 points from winning positions in the Premier League, at least 12 more than any other side in that time.
They opened the scoring in both of their league matches this season but failed to win either, and Newcastle are 11/1 to win from behind, while it is 24/5 that Newcastle win after drawing at half-time.
Newcastle will hope to keep a tight rein on Adam Armstrong. He has looked sharp since arriving from Blackburn after scoring 28 goals in the Championship last season, although he missed a simple chance against Manchester United.
