Preview and odds for Saturday’s Premier League clash

Chelsea will bid to bounce back after seeing their unbeaten start to the season ended last week, and we examine the odds to find some Chelsea v Southampton betting tips.

The European champions were defeated 1-0 by Manchester City at Stamford Bridge which was followed by a 1-0 loss at Juventus in the Champions League, while Southampton are still seeking a first win of the season after falling 1-0 at home to Wolves.

Saturday’s match, which takes place at Stamford Bridge, kicks off at 3pm.

Chelsea v Southampton match odds

Gabriel Jesus’s 53rd-minute strike was enough to end Chelsea’s unbeaten record last weekend and Liverpool’s point at Brentford was enough to see them leapfrog the Blues at the top of the Premier League table.

Thomas Tuchel’s side sit third with 13 points from six games. Three of their four defeats since the German took charge have come at home.

The Blues haven’t lost consecutive league games at Stamford Bridge since December 2019, the second game of which came against Southampton, and they are 2/5 to record a fifth win of the season.

Southampton are one of five teams without a win in the Premier League this season – only twice in their top-flight history have they failed to win any of their first seven games to a campaign (1996-97 and 1998-99).

They have a problem scoring goals and have failed to net in five of their last eight league games, including each of the last three in a row. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are 8/1 to win, although it is 5/4 for Chelsea to win and keep the Saints scoreless again in the Chelsea v Southampton betting tips.

Three of their last four clashes have ended in draws and the odds for the game to end in a stalemate are 15/4.

Chelsea v Southampton head-to-head

Chelsea are winless in their last three league games against Southampton (D2 L1), last having a longer winless run against them between October 1990 and December 1993 (seven games).

Indeed, Saints have taken 19 points from 22 Premier League away games against Chelsea (W4 D7 L11) – only at Aston Villa (27) and Crystal Palace (21) have Saints earned more away points in the Premier League.

In only seven of the last 22 meetings in all competitions have both sides failed to score, and it is 19/20 that both sides find the net this time in the Chelsea v Southampton betting tips.

Chelsea v Southampton key battles

No side has scored more first-half goals than Chelsea in the Premier League this season (six, tied with Liverpool) and they are 5/6 to be the first team to score in the first half.

However, Southampton are one of just two sides (along with Man City) yet to concede before half-time this term, with all seven goals against them coming in the second half. It is 13/5 that the second half will produce the first goal of the game.

Saints will be wary of Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who has scored nine goals in his 12 Premier League games against them. The Belgium international is 7/10 to score at any stage and it is 9/4 that he scores the last goal of the game.
