Tottenham v Man City betting tips: City look undercooked

| 10.08.2021

Preview and odds for Sunday’s Premier League clash

Spurs face the Premier League champions, who begin their quest for a fourth title in five seasons, and we have examined the odds for some Tottenham v Man City betting tips.

City have fortified their ranks with the purchase of Jack Grealish for a club record £100 million and could yet buy Tottenham’s star striker Harry Kane.

Sunday’s match, which takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, is live on Sky Sports and kicks off at 4.30pm.

Tottenham v Man City match odds

Much of the pre-match talk has surrounded last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner Kane, who has publicly stated his desire to leave Spurs.

City are interested suitors, although he is unlikely to face Pep Guardiola’s side as he has only just returned to training.

Tottenham are 9/2 to beat City on Sunday and are 13/10 to either win or draw the game on the Double Chance market.

While Kane may be missing, they still have Heung-Min Son in a forward position – he is 21/10 to score at any time – and they face a City side that will be far from full strength.

Tottenham had a decent pre-season and will have been buoyed by a recent friendly victory over north London rivals Arsenal.

Spurs are Evens to earn a top-six finish and are 9/2 to make the Champions League top-four finishing spot.

City, 4/6 to successfully defend their title in the Premier League winner odds, have had a strange pre-season, disrupted by Covid-19 outbreaks plus cancelled and hastily-rearranged friendlies.

Many of their star names have been away on international duty at the European Championship and Copa America.

City were beaten 1-0 by Leicester in the Community Shield last weekend thanks to a late penalty from substitute Kelechi Iheanacho.

It was a fourth defeat in six games in all competitions, which is as many defeats as in their previous 53 matches combined (W43, D6, L4).

City are 3/5 to beat Tottenham, who will hope they are catching Guardiola’s team at the right time, while the draw is on offer at 29/10.

Riyad Mahrez, Manchester City, Tottenham v Man City betting tips

Tottenham v Man City head-to-head

These teams have met 164 times since 1909, with Tottenham winning 63, City winning 65 and 36 games drawn.

City won both previous games in 2021, 3-0 at home in the league and 1-0 away in the League Cup. They can be backed at 9/5 to win to nil again in Tottenham v Man City betting tips.

Spurs won both Premier League meetings in 2020 by 2-0 scorelines and it is 9/1 that they win to nil.

Tottenham have won seven of the last 25 meetings, while City have won 15, with three games drawn. It is 13/2 that the game ends in a 1-1 draw.

Tottenham v Man City team news

City’s Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden will miss the start of the season through injury. The likes of Raheem Sterling, John Stones, Kyle Walker, Gabriel Jesus and Ederson were not due back until last Monday, and will likely see limited time, if any.

Oleksandr Zinchenko has also been handed extra time off following the birth of his child and Aymeric Laporte has had to isolate.

Grealish may only be fit enough for a place on the bench so Ferran Torres may deputise, while Riyad Mahrez, who has looked sharp in pre-season, will spearhead the City attack.

Kane has yet to feature in pre-season for Spurs, but notched 23 goals and registered 14 assists in the Premier League last term. He is unlikely to play, although Nuno Espirito Santo insists he is available for the clash.

Tottenham v Man City key battles

City had no less than 17 players involved in international competitions this summer and they come into the season under-cooked.

They don’t have a recognised striker after Sergio Aguero’s departure to Barcelona on a free transfer, and started slowly last season, losing 5-2 at home to Leicester.

Tottenham are 8/1 to win but concede, and it is 55/1 for Son to score the first goal and Tottenham to win 2-1 in the Scorecast market.

Tottenham have looked relatively solid with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the Denmark midfielder, proving a good signing since arriving from Southampton last year.

He will play a key role in slowing down the distribution to Mahrez, and is 11/1 to score at any time.
