Horse Racing Trader’s Tips: Gulfstream Park Preview – Saturday 28th March

| 27.03.2020

Who’s caught our traders’ eye in Saturday’s racing?

We’ve got plenty of racing Stateside to look forward to, but it’s the Gulfstream Park meet which is the focus thanks to a 14-race card, including the Florida Derby.

The action from Hallandale Beach, Florida gets underway at 15:30 and our expert Ian Rozzier has given us his picks on the day’s action…

Leading Jockeys

Out of the riders lining up, it’s Luis Saez who leads the way in terms of winners and experience on this course.

This season, Saez has ridden 104 winners including a five-timer on Thursday. The Panamanian jockey steps in as the leading jockey after the Puerto Rican superstar Irad Ortiz Jr announced he’d taken the decision not to ride during the COVID-19 outbreak via Twitter.

With a booked ride in each race, Saez lines up on the following: Enjoyitwhilewecan (15:30), Bernin’ Thru Gold (16:00), Largent (16:30), Summer To Remember (17:00), Almashriq (17:30), Rare Form (18:00), Onyx (18:30), He Hate Me (19:00), Souper Escape (19:34), Mean Mary (20:17), Four Grands (20:49), Focus Group (21:26), Sombeyay (22:00) & Ajaaweed (22:30).

Leading Trainer

Training more winners than anyone else at Gulfstream Park so far this season, it’s Todd Pletcher who’s our leading trainer. He’s got a strike rate of 23%, notching 42 winners already.

He’s sending out no less than 19 runners over this 14-race card, including two in the Florida Derby at 22:30 in the shape of Gouverneur Morris and Candy Tycoon.

The full list of Pletcher’s runners: Bering Strait (15:30), Largent & Opry (16:30), Summer To Remember (17:00), Uncle Mojo & Intrepid Heart (17:30), You’re To Blame & American Tattoo (18:00), Last Judgement (19:00), Cap De Creus (20:17), Spice Is Nice & Mrs. S (20:49), Channel Cat & Current (21:26), Social Paranoia, Sombeyay & Halladay (22:00) & Gouverneur Morris & Candy Tycoon 22:36).

Horse to Watch

Newspaperofrecord, the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, had the world at her feet after an undefeated juvenile campaign. But as a three-year-old, Chad Brown’s filly has failed to win any of her three starts.

She’s back in action in the Sand Spring Stakes at 19:34, looking to get her career back on track.

Race to Watch

Despite having the Kentucky Derby postponed until September, the Florida Derby remains a major trial. It’s the last race on the 14-race card, getting underway at 22:36.

Over the years, it’s a race that has produced 24 runners that have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, including Barbaro, Big Brown, Orb, Nyquist and Always Dreaming.

This year’s renewal looks typically strong, with Tiz The Law heading the market. The three-year-old colt, trained by Barclay Tagg, has won three of his four starts this season including the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes on what was only his second start.

His campaign started with a 3l win over Ete Indian, who went on to frank the form by landing the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes in February.
