Odds and preview for this week’s European Tour event

Jon Rahm bids to defend his Spanish Open title at the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid on Thursday, and we look at the odds to find some Open De Espana betting tips.

The Open De Espana has been played since 1912, and has formed part of the PGA European Tour since 1972. It is one of the oldest championships in the world and has been won in recent years by Rahm (2018 and 2019), Andrew Johnston (2016), James Morrison (2015) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (2014). The event was cancelled last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This tree-lined, 7,112-yard par-71 course has deep bunkers. It has hosted 12 Spanish Opens and well as numerous Madrid Masters and Madrid Opens.

Market leaders

There is only one place to start, with Rahm the 9/4 favourite to win this title for a third successive occasion. The last player to win three Spanish Opens was Seve Ballesteros in 1995 and they came over the space of 14 years.

Rahm cruised to a five-shot win from fellow Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello when shooting 22-under-par and the world number one is naturally a short-priced favourite to win. Samuel del Val and Adri Arnaus were next on the scoreboard, making it a true celebration of Spanish golf.

Seven-time European Tour winner Rahm has a great strike rate – this will be only his 53rd Tour event. The field is not a strong one and he is a worthy favourite in his first event since the Ryder Cup.

Rahm’s chief threat could be Bernd Wiesberger, who will be keen to put behind him the disappointment of not even picking up half a point at Whistling Straights.

The pressure has got to the Austrian before, as evidenced at the European Masters at Crans when he double-bogeyed the last to allow Rasmus Hojgaard to snatch a one-shot victory.

Wiesberger is 18/1 to win in the Open De Espana betting tips.

Larger odds

With those two clear of the remainder in the betting market, there are some potential each-way targets and Guido Migliozzi will go on many lists at 30/1.

Fourth to Rahm in the US Open, he was more recently seventh in Switzerland and 17th on Sunday at St Andrews, where Danny Willett bounced back to form to take the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Migliozzo lacks consistency, but the Italian clearly has the talent to gain a third European Tour win.

Arnaus (pictured above) is comfortable on this course and at 40/1 is another who should go well. He was T12 in the Italian Open and played some good shots at St Andrew’s last weekend, which included an opening-round 64, but he finished T24 after a last-round 73 saw him drop away.

Scottish Open winner Min Woo Lee, at 45/1, may also appeal. He has been consistent in recent outings with a T21 at the European Masters and a T12 at the Italian Open.

Elsewhere

Santiago Tarrio has been in great form on the Challenger Tour this year with two victories and seven top-10 finishes, so can be considered for Open De Espana betting tips at 60/1.

Jamie Donaldson was T3 at the Cazoo Classic and T2 at the BMW Championship, so his odds of 60/1 will look big to some.

With the leaderboard dominated by Spanish players last time, Rahm’s compatriots David Puig, Alvaro Quiros and Jorge Campillo can all expect to have support, and the latter has three top-10 finishes in this event so his odds of 100/1 may also look inviting.
