Wells Fargo Championship betting tips: Happy memories for Thomas

| 04.05.2021

Preview and Odds for this week’s PGA Tour event

The PGA Tour is in North Carolina this week as the Wells Fargo Championship returns after last year’s postponement.

Max Homa is the defending champion after his success in 2019 and is 33/1 to become the first player to retain the title here.

He will feature in plenty of Wells Fargo Championship betting tips, having already won the Genesis Invitational this year and the big-hitting Californian finishing tied for sixth at last week’s Valspar Championship despite a costly 74 in his final round.

There are plenty of big names in action this week, including the top two in the FedEx Cup in Justin Thomas and Bryson DeChambeau.

Thomas is the joint-favourite in the Wells Fargo Championship odds at 10/1 as he returns to the course where he famously won his first major at the 2017 US PGA Championship.

Alongside Thomas at the top of the betting is Jon Rahm while DeChambeau is 14/1 but his recent struggles with the putter will put many off, especially having finished outside the top 40 in his two most recent tournaments.

McIlroy hat-trick bid

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is the only player to win the Wells Fargo Championship on more than one occasion and is 18/1 to complete his hat-trick after victories here in 2010 and 2015, when he set a new course record on each occasion.

McIlroy also finished tied for eighth in 2019 and has only finished outside the top 10 twice in nine appearances in this event so a return to his best form would be the ideal way to celebrate turning 32 this week.

Webb Simpson would be a popular winner at Quail Hollow, where he is a member, and is available at 20/1. He has had two top-five finishes here already, including runner-up in 2015 and will be desperate to get over the line in his home event.

Will Zalatoris made many sit up and take notice of him at the Masters recently when he finished runner-up.

He is yet to miss a cut in 2021 and is 25/1 to go one better than he did at Augusta as he returns to action after a two-week break.

Fowler needs form boost

Rickie Fowler has endured a tough 12 months but will hope a return to Quail Hollow helps him rediscover the form which saw him win his first PGA Tour title here in 2012.

He was tied fourth when this event was last played two years ago and could attract some interest at 60/1.

Another option at a big price is 45/1 shot Keegan Bradley, who finished runner-up to Sam Burns at the Valspar Championship on Sunday.

Bradley was tied with his American compatriot after 36 and 54 holes and remained in contention until he found water with his drive on the 13th in his final round.

That performance lifted him from 135th to 74th in the world rankings and he has plenty of incentive to try and maintain that momentum, given he needs to be in the top 60 after the upcoming PGA Championship to qualify for the US Open.
