US Open betting tips: Djokovic bids for grand slam record
Preview and odds for the men’s final
The US Open at Flushing Meadows reaches a climax with Novak Djokovic taking on Daniil Medvedev so we look at the odds to find some US Open betting tips.
Sunday’s final, at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York, is scheduled to take place at 9pm BST and is live on Amazon Prime Video.
Djokovic on brink of history
In a thoroughly memorable US Open tournament, Novak Djokovic is on the cusp of something remarkable.
The Serb seeks a record 21st grand slam title and can complete an historic Calendar Slam – all four major wins in the same year – for the first time in over half a century in the process.
Should he win the US Open, he will surpass Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the grand slam race for the first time in his career.
The number one seed had to rally from behind for the fourth time in as many matches in a punishing semi-final against Alexander Zverev.
Djokovic overcame an uncertain start against one of the few players capable of out-muscling him from the baseline to win a three-and-a-half-hour marathon in five sets 4-6 6-2 6-4 4-6 6-2.
In doing so, the 34-year-old avenged his three-set loss to the German in the semi-final of the Tokyo Olympics.
He has been far from perfect over the last fortnight, though in fairness, he has overcome a tricky draw.
He needed four sets to overcome each of Kei Nishikori, Jenson Brooksby and Matteo Berrettini, before his semi-final marathon.
But the fact remains he has now won 27 consecutive grand slam matches and is 4/11 to defeat Daniil Medvedev.
Should he win, Djokovic will become the first to win all four majors in a calendar year since Rod Laver managed the feat in 1969.
Though he has won 20 of his 30 major finals, he has dropped the first set in 10 of his 27-match unbeaten run in majors and it is 13/10 that Medvedev win the first set of the final in the US Open betting tips.
Medvedev serve is key
Number two seed Medvedev has been in great form over the past two weeks and advanced to the final with a straight-sets win (6-4 7-5 6-2) over Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime on Friday.
Medvedev’s route to the final has a bit cleaner, with straight-set wins in every match but his quarter-final against the unseeded Botic van de Zandschulp, which went to four sets (6-3 6-0 4-6 7-5).
Like his opponent, the Russian has also had a big year. He reached the final at the Australian Open and won titles at the Canada Masters, Marseille and Mallorca.
Medvedev is 2/1 to win the US Open and he has won three of the last eight meetings with Djokovic, including three of the last five.
However, he has never beaten the Serb in a grand slam event.
In their last meeting, Djokovic defeated the 25-year-old in straight sets in the Australian Open final earlier this year. It is 15/8 Djokovic wins in straight sets again and 2/5 Medvedev lands at least one set.
Medvedev has a big weapon – his serve. He has blasted 70 aces this week and won over 80 per cent of his points on his first serve.
Yet Djokovic’s backhand return is one of the best on tour and he was extremely aggressive from the start in Melbourne and could employ a similar strategy.
