Music charity profits after Sports Team’s near miss

| 31.07.2020

The band backed themselves to get a number one album with Coral

Sports Team celebrated their album Deep Down Happy topping the charts in June, but they almost landed another big win from bets placed with Coral back in 2017.

The Mercury Prize-shortlisted band placed a number of bets that they would have an Official UK Number One album by January 2020. They then sent out the slips with t-shirts to fans. Each one would have won £100 from just 50p.

Fast forward three years, and they found themselves with an Official Number One Album in June 2020, beating All Time Low and Lady Gaga to the top spot on the Vinyl table for the week ending 12th of June – only just missing their self-imposed deadline.

As a goodwill gesture, Coral have honoured the bets and made a donation of £1,000 to a charity of Sports Team’s choice. The band chose the Music Venues Trust, which will help with their vital fundraising at a time that venues, communities and upcoming artists need it most.

On the bet, Alex Rice from the band said: “I placed the bets back in 2017 when we were recording Winter Nets, which was our first EP. We sent them out with t-shirts to what felt like about nine fans at the time after a gig.

“Everything we’ve done up to this point since has been an attempt to cash these in but we got the date just a few months out!”

Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead said: “We were very pleased to make a donation to the Music Venues Trust on behalf of Sports Team, not least because it is a great charity but also as a gesture of appreciation at how close the band came to landing a sensational bet.

“They backed themselves to make it to the top, and if only they’d given themselves another six months they’d have been celebrating even more.”

All odds and markets correct as of date of publication.
